1991’s Toejam and Earl was the first open world game I remember playing. It’s even more strange because it wasn’t an open world game. But I just remember having more fun geeking around with it’s power ups and props than actually trying to grind through the game. It’s art design and aesthetic were such a cohesive hodgepodge of 90’s nonsense reminiscent of, Midway artist, Brian Colin’s caricature art style but incorporating the out of the box game design that was commonplace from Sega back in the day. Shit, me and my brother wasted hours just dorking around in the hot tub. I don’t even remember what we did on that one level but we had a blast.
Recently on FaceBook, ToeJam & Earl co-creator Greg Johnson, revealed that a new game was going to be released in the series. Official word is to be made within the next few weeks, but in the meantime Johnson continues to tease fans with concept art from the original game and comments via the official ToeJam & Earl Facebook page.
